1987 U.S. Military Unimog w/backhoe and loader - $21500 (Shepherd)

1987 FLU419 Unimog Military Tractor. Rather new at less than 100 hours—odometer shows 43 miles. Virtually unused by the military. This thing is awesome...could be the perfect ranch rig with its front end loader and compact case backhoe. Or use for your construction business and/or remove the attachments and create a super off road vehicle. This rig is heavy duty and rather agile and rare in the US. Call Sam at [redacted].

SOLD! I HAVE ONE MORE TO SELL HAS 36HRS. ON THE MOTOR IDENTICAL TO ABOVE.

There is a Unimog down the street from me. There was also a mil-spec Doka behind it earlier.

I found these today, I just didn’t have the energy to do a FOMC post.

and the something I might actually consider buying:

True. It perhaps seems a bit much at $21k American for just one vehicle, but the backhoe part of it could easily retail for $16k-$18k+ as an independent vehicle, and when you count in the fact it doesn’t need its own trailer and so to say has an Unimog thrown in - and could be used as a snowplow truck, even - the advantages start to rack up like mad.

If this was on the UK market at c.£14k, and the digging bucket was swappable with multiple attachments (it doesn’t look like it is) like a Manitou’s lift arm; in a heartbeat. I wonder how the backhoe is controlled? Must be machine side, so exposed to the elements.

Yep, looks like a little vinyl seat out in the weather. Man running the hoe freezes to death, but not the man with the loader, not at all. Bucket should swap at least, and I can see some kind of loop for something on the boom, so there might be other attachments. Probably a demo hammer if nothing else. One certain plus to this that’s easily overlooked - with the base vehicle as a road-going ‘mog and barely needing to do more than tick over running the hydraulic pump, it’s probably quite quiet.

Fun note: I used to work summers at a construction equipment rental place, and my dad’s had a baby backhoe and tractor for groundskeeping for ages.

I love excavators and backhoes. I probably only get to use one once or twice a month for foundation works and grading, and it’s always hired. I’ve thought about buying a Hitachi 2.5tonne excavator (superb response and dexterity on the levers) with variable track width for a while now, but sometimes access just doesn’t allow, so I’ve put it off and put it off. I’m aware a ‘mog would be even worse, but it’d be a great figurehead. Pull it up to a job, look the business, then just drive it home.
